The Little Things Aren't Little
A butterfly landed near my feet and reminded me that some of life's biggest lessons arrive in the smallest moments.
The other day, I was walking along, thinking about everything that needed done.
The next phone call.
The next meeting.
The next drive.
The next bill.
The next challenge.
Then, almost out of nowhere, a butterfly landed just a few feet away.
It didn’t say anything.
It didn’t solve a problem.
It didn’t change the direction of my day.
But it did change my attention.
For a minute, all the noise stopped.
I found myself watching something so simple, so ordinary, that I almost would have missed it if I had been looking at my phone or rushing to the next thing.
That’s the funny part about life.
We’re often so busy chasing the “big moments” that we overlook the little ones that quietly shape who we become.
A child’s laugh.
A cup of coffee with a friend.
A text asking how you’re doing.
A sunset.
A stranger holding the door.
A butterfly that decides your shoe looks like a good place to land.
Those moments rarely make headlines.
They won’t trend on social media.
Nobody hands out awards for noticing them.
Yet when I look back over the hardest years of my life, those are the moments I remember most.
Not the meetings.
Not the speeches.
Not even many of the victories.
I remember the conversations.
The unexpected kindness.
The quiet reminders that there is still beauty in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming.
The little things become the big things because they’re what carry us between life’s mountains.
They remind us to slow down.
To breathe.
To notice.
Maybe that’s something we all need a little more of.
So today, pay attention.
Look up.
Put the phone down for a few minutes.
Notice what’s happening around you.
Because sometimes the biggest lesson of the day arrives on wings no bigger than your hand.
And if you’re paying attention...
It might land right beside you.
